Oxygen Concentrator FAQ
What is the difference between Hospital Oxygen and Oxygen Concentrator
Hospital oxygen typically comes from liquid oxygen, which provides a concentration of 100%. In contrast, oxygen concentrators, which require a stable electrical source, use ambient air and filter it to achieve an oxygen concentration of over 85%. According to WHO guidelines, medical oxygen is defined as having an oxygen concentration above 85%.
At Medivac, our oxygen concentrators can deliver medical-grade oxygen with a concentration exceeding 90% and we do provide oxygen concentrator rental services for home use.
Do I need to Top Up my Oxygen Concentrator ?
Oxygen concentrators do not require refills like gas cylinders. As medical devices, it is important for caregivers to arrange for preventive maintenance once every year with their supplier. This ensures that the oxygen purity meets medical standards.
How do I know how many LPM the patient requires ?
However, a patient’s condition can change when they are feeling unwell, and their oxygen requirements may increase.
To adjust the oxygen levels, you should visually assess the patient’s respiration rate and have a pulse oximeter on hand to measure the patient’s SpO2 (blood oxygen saturation).
- For healthy individuals, oxygen is generally increased until reaching a target SpO2 of 94%.
- For patients with lung conditions such as COPD, oxygen is usually increased until they achieve a target SpO2 of above 88% or until the patient feels comfortable.
- For patients in palliative care, the focus is primarily on patient comfort. In such cases, healthcare providers will typically administer a breakthrough dose of morphine or fentanyl when the patient exhibits signs of respiratory distress.
