To adjust the oxygen levels, you should visually assess the patient’s respiration rate and have a pulse oximeter on hand to measure the patient’s SpO2 (blood oxygen saturation). 

1. For healthy individuals, oxygen is generally increased until reaching a target SpO2 of 94%. 
2. For patients with lung conditions such as COPD, oxygen is usually increased until they achieve a target SpO2 of above 88% or until the patient feels comfortable. 
3. For patients in palliative care, the focus is primarily on patient comfort. In such cases, healthcare providers will typically administer a breakthrough dose of morphine or fentanyl when the patient exhibits signs of respiratory distress.
